Energy saving on corn drying

In the example below for drying corn, we have used the following formula:

Suppose you have 10,000 kg of corn with a moisture content of 35%. The target moisture content is 14.5%. This means that 2,398 kg of water must be extracted from the corn. A conventional continuous dryer needs about 1500 Wh/kg H2O, which means you need 3,597 kWh of power for the drying process.

Very often products are over-dried during the drying process and moistened again in later stages. This is a major waste of energy and money and bad for the company's carbon footprint.

! Germany alone produced more than 4 million tons of maize in 2021. Now imagine a deviation in moisture results of 1% - this would cost 22.4 million Euros of electricity per year!

Ultimate control over the drying process, energy consumption and waste reduction

With the microwave resonance technology from TEWS you are assured that moisture results are checked with very high precision and speed. Flawless integration of measurement data directly into the processing unit provides ultimate control over the drying process. In addition, many production lines do not use closed-loop control systems to monitor and optimize the drying phase, leading to inaccurate moisture results and quality variation. In the worst case, an entire batch is destroyed and the product is wasted.

With the TEWS moisture measurement system integrated into the drying, the process can be accurately managed while the dryer is shut down just in time. Integration of moisture data into the closed-loop controller enables continuous product control.

What percentage of energy can you save on average in the drying process?

Through experience in different industrial areas and with different analysis technologies, we know that you can save energy with TEWS measurement technology. Below we give an example of possible energy savings in a number of sectors. You can also easily make the calculation for your sector with the formula and current energy price.

Grain production 9%

Plasterboard industry 10%

Corrugated cardboard 7.5%

Pharmaceutical industry 8%

This document takes a closer look at microwave technology and energy savings for the pharmaceutical industry. The investment in in-line moisture analysis with microwave technology in this industry is expected to pay for itself within a year
