What categories of additives are there in lubricants?
The different types of additives can be divided into three categories: the viscosity index improvers, boundary lubrication additives and other additives. The name viscosity index improver actually says it all, it improves the viscosity index. Boundary lubrication additives are added to improve friction and wear under boundary lubrication conditions. This includes anti-wear additives, extreme pressure additives and friction-modifying additives. Other additives include corrosion inhibitors, detergent additives, dispersant additives, anti-foam additives and anti-oxidants.
