Operation of the hydrocarbon analyzer

The response time of the hydrocarbon analyzers is a few seconds. Organic compounds from the sample stream or separation column are injected into the detector housing where they are mixed with hydrogen and air before entering the detector where the mixture is burned. During this process, organic compounds are broken into carbon fragments and they acquire a positive charge (ionization) at the surface of the anode. Carbon fragments are detected, the signal is amplified and then sent to the data processing system.

Teledyne's analysers are configured to customer requirements to meet all monitoring needs. Emission sources can be identified quickly and efficiently.

Different models of hydrocarbon analyzers and applications

All models of the 4000 series use the same electronics and the base is uniform. Below is an overview of the different functions of each analyzer.

Model 4020 Total Hydrocarbon Analyser

Uses flame ionization detection to measure the total hydrocarbon content in a gas sample in ppm. This model is ideal for reducing hydrocarbon contamination in high purity bulk gases. Combined with Teledyne's chromatography column, the 4020 is ideally suited for hazardous location applications for the detection of volatile hydrocarbons in cooling water, process leak detection and environmental compliance.

Applications:

  • Monitoring the purity of oxygen, argon, nitrogen and other "cover gases" (blanketing) in the manufacture of, for example, electronics in the semiconductor industry.
  • Monitoring of hydrocarbon pollution in air liquefaction and other gas production processes.
  • Gas purity certification
  • Detection of traces of hydrocarbon in the ambient air
  • Detection of air pollutants
  • Check for fuel leaks or toxic solvents
  • Monitoring of hydrocarbons in CO2 feed streams in the food and beverage industry

Model 4030 Total Hydrocarbon Analyser

Basic 4020 with higher temperature sampling system for heated applications. Prevents condensation of the sample.

Applications:

  • Environmental monitoring of total hydrocarbon
  • Total hydrocarbon measurement for automobile exhaust

Model 4040 Methane / Non-methane

Basic 4020 includes a temperature controlled sampling system with GC (Gas Chromatography) column for accurate measurements of both methane hydrocarbons and non-methane hydrocarbons in a gas stream.

Applications:

Process monitoring - monitoring with alarm or control of: process gas flows with organic solvents, crude oil and other chemicals containing hydrocarbons.

Efficiency monitoring - Monitoring of volatile organic compounds for environmental compliance, efficiency monitoring of combustion plants (thermal or catalytic), gas scrubbers, carbon adsorption and other purification equipment, monitoring of catalytic converters, combustion and efficiency of diesel engines.

Environmental monitoring - Monitoring and / or control of ovens, dryers, emission monitoring of volatile substances, monitoring (safety) of the work floor, leak detection of process equipment or storage areas for solvents.

Model 4060 Benzene

Same as 4040, but used to measure Benzene levels instead of Methane / Non-Methane.

Applications:

  • Monitoring of benzene in CO₂ feed streams (blanketing) in the food and beverage industry.
  • Detection of traces of benzene in the ambient air
  • Monitoring the purity of nitrogen, oxygen, argon and other cover gases
  • Ethylene oxygen monitoring in sterile environments
